Along with immigrants coming to Macao are the languages they speak. Since Macao is a tourism city, immigrants who come and work here, especially those occupying in hospitality industry, also need to master English and learn basic Cantonese and Mandarin to communicate with their employers and tourists. The linguistic diversity of Macao comes from the diversified immigrant groups. It not only includes the official languages of their home countries, but also the dialects of the different regions. Sometimes different dialects are even used within the same immigrant family. Also, because they are from foreign nationalities, their languages using is limited within their ethnic groups. Meanwhile, among the local languages of Macao, Patuá is very unique.

The users of Patuá are the Macanese community, which refers to the descendants of the Portuguese who married with the Macao’s Chinese residents in the old days, who have the sense of identity to Portuguese culture. The Patuá is the linguistic product of the long-term integration of Portuguese and Cantonese, which is very distinctive.
