of Macao

Overview

Macao was called ‘Amacao’ previously in Portuguese, and called ‘Haojing Ao’ in Chinese. Since Portuguese have reached here in 16th Century, for the next five centuries, people from different countries or backgrounds continuously chose to settle in Macao for better lives. Ever after, different cultures brought by these immigrants have also integrated and developed in Macao, becoming the Macao’s unique multicultural context contemporarily.

In this context, apart from the dominant Chinese origin culture and Macanese culture in Macao, different immigrant ethnicities, variable languages and mixed religions are also the fragments hidden under the mainstream. Together, these fragments reflect the colorful cultural attractiveness of Macao. Let us “Explore hidden diversities of Macao” together!
