Thai

The arrival of Thais in Macau can be traced back to the spice trade in the 17th century, but most of the Thai community seen today only emerged in the late 20th century. Most of the Thais live in the Tap Siac Square. Some of them came to Macau through fellow villagers, others worked in the Hotel Estoril and some of the women settled in Macau after getting married. The Thai community in Rua de Abreu Nunes is dominated by the catering business. Many Thais have lived in Macau for over ten years and are fluent in Cantonese. In addition to opening restaurants, they also run grocery shops, etc. However, around the time of Macau's return to China, some Thais returned to their hometown, so the number has now decreased.

Community & Place

Community:Non-resident workers

Living place: They usually rent near the restaurant where they work, mostly with Thai colleagues from the same restaurant.  Or settle down in Macau and live with your family.

Gathering place: Rua de Abreu Nunes(荷蘭園二馬路)

Custom & Language

Custom:

1) Water-splashing Festival: Lunar New Year(陽曆新年)

In recent years, they have not been in the habit of Water-splashing Festival, because they are busy at work, and there is no time to participate, so the festival gradually declined. Ten years ago, they would celebrate by having dinner with family and friends, giving red envelopes, and worshiping gods.

2) The Thailand Cultural Festival:

The Thailand Cultural Festival is held every December 4 Rua do Abreu Nunes to celebrate the birth of the King of Thailand.  The two-day event will focus on Promoting Thai culture and foods.  There will also be exhibition booths featuring Thai dance and music.  In addition, there will be a birthday ceremony for the King of Thailand, among which Hong Kong will also assign relevant people to participate in the activity, and the host is the Thais Buddhist monk.

Significance

Thais are only a small group in Macau and they have brought many local cuisines to Macau.  Society should provide more protection for their rights and interests.

Risk & Protection

Most Thais are integrated into Macau life.   However, not all Thais are well protected when it comes to health care.  Some older Thais have poor verbal communication skills, and with a Southeast Asian population, a small number of doctors ignore their own medical conditions.
