Vietnamese

The history of the Vietnamese presence in Macao dates back to the 1970s, when in 1977 the most frenzied Chinese exclusion in the history of Vietnam broke out, and the persecution of Chinese in Vietnam led to the departure of some who came to Macau as a result of a more liberal entry policy.

The Sino-Vietnamese conflict in 1978 led to a massive influx of Vietnamese refugees into Macao.

On July 27, 1978,  a temporary camp for Vietnamese refugees was established at Ka Ho Village.  At that time, the refugee transients could be found in three places in Macao, including the Green Island, the Taipa Police District (now the Macao Scout Association) and the Ka Ho Refugee Camp (now the Macao Salesian Youth Ministry). Between 1978 and 1988, there were 8,608 refugees from Vietnam and 433 Vietnamese children born in Macao.

To this day, there are still many Vietnamese residing in Macao, most of them are domestic workers, and it is also common to see Vietnamese on the street.

Community & Place

The majority of Vietnamese prefer to live in the vicinity of Sam Chan Dang area and Rua da Emenda because of the lower rents and the presence of Southeast Asian supermarkets and snack shops nearby.

There is a Vietnamese supermarket called “Tan Viet Hiong” located at the Rua da Emenda, selling Viet snacks and products, you can find some traditional Viet seasoning like the sweet & sour fish sauce, which is essential for Vietnamese cuisine.

They set up the altar and prepared the altarages, also wore “AoDai”(Viet traditional dress ) to the temple to pray for peace and happiness for the coming new year.

For language, Vietnamese as their mother language, while some of the Vietnamese in Macao with Cantonese ancestors, they retain a tradition of using Cantonese, so there are few language barriers to integrate into Macao society.

Significance

The older generation of Vietnamese who came to Macao were historical witnesses to the policy of discriminating the Chinese and the Sino-Vietnamese War. Macao provided them with a shelter from the chaos while their arrival brought a unique cultural flavor to Macao.

Today, the Vietnamese are Macao’s third-largest expatriate community, continue the city's diversity with their food and traditions.

Risk & Protection

The new generation of Vietnamese born in Macao gradually speak Cantonese as their first language and even don't understand the Vietnamese, the Vietnamese community should take actions to promote their language and transfer to their next generation.

Although the traditional festivals are similar to those in China, the Vietnamese tradition of celebration  has its own characteristics which deserve to preserve to more audience.
