Hakka

There are 3 important time spots in Hakka history timeline:

Immigrants in Qing Dynasty: After the battle between Cantonese and Hakka in the Qing dynasty, the Hakka moved to Macao. Now there are still many Hakka people living mainly in Ka Ho village and Ha Sac Village, most of them came to Macao around this period. According to the records, a large number of Chinese workers came from the above-mentioned places such as Kaiping, Heshan, etc.

Refuge during national calamity: When the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Macao and Hong Kong became the main refuges for the people in southern China. From the Japanese bombing of Guangzhou in June 1938 to the fall of Guangzhou City on October 21 of the same year, citizens moved out of the city and the population dropped sharply. The number of people who left every day was over tens of thousands. They went to Hong Kong and Macao ports. Demographic surge from Southern China to Macao at that time increase.

Modern source from 1940s to 1970s: About 100,000 Hakka live in Macao currently. Due to the economic take-off of Macao in the 1970s, there was a great demand for labour, and with China's open-door policy in the late 1970s, a large number of ethnic Chinese flocked from China to Macao to make a living.

Community & Place

In Macao, several associations have been established, such as the Macao Jiaying Association, Macao Meizhou Chamber of Commerce, Macao Heyuan Association, Hac Sa Villagers Mutual Assistance Association and Ka Ho Villagers Mutual Assistance Association. In order to unite the Hakka people and the Hakka descent and carry forward the traditional Hakka spirit of loving the country. Each Hakka would develop a unique network of relationships and maintain the relationship in their own ways. They can always have an enjoyable time with other Hakkas. The red market and the Rotunda de Carlos da Maia are two places where the older generation of Hakka people often gathered and helped with each other.

Custom & Language:

Ka Ho Village still retains many Hakka customs, such as speaking Hakka dialect, singing Hakka songs, as well as wedding customs, funerals, festivals, and diet traditions.

Typical examples:

The Hakka custom that remained for thousands of years in Hakka history:

When there are villagers passed away, Hakka would first bury the body in coffins, and after a few years, the bone ashes were taken out and put into clay pots, and then tombstones were built, commonly known as secondary burial.

The tradition of "polytheism" is the most distinctive mark of Hakka as a migratory nation. Wherever the Hakka settled down, they began to seek the gods' blessing. Among the gods they worshipped, the ones Hakka worshipped the most are Guan Yin and the Sam Seng Guandi.

Risk  & Protection

According to the interview, Hakka people always believe that when there are people, there is always culture. Hakka is famous because they are a migratory nation. and they always assist each other to make a living; therefore, the Hakka culture travels with them and some part of it is recreated and some of it is preserved in the original style such as custom and architecture.
