Filipinos

Since the late 15th Century, the Philippines has had stable trading connections with Macao, and become one of the significant parts of the China – Philippine – Mexico – Peru trading chain.  After the Portuguese were forced to end trade with Japan in the 17th Century, the trading relationship between Macao and Philippine (Manila) became a critical support of Macao’s prosperity. Since then, Filipinos have come to Macao by merchant ships and settled here.

In the ensuing wave of Chinese exclusion in Southeast Asian countries in the mid-20th Century, some Filipinos who married Chinese in the Philippines came to Macao with them and settled at Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro or Rua da Emenda areas.

Nowadays, the number of Macao’s Filipino migrant workers jumped from less than 3,000 in 2003 to more than 20,000 in August 2015, which was a sevenfold increase. Most of Macao's Filipino immigrants settled for a better life and higher incomes. Many of them would choose to be family helpers or tutors, and some would choose to work in casinos, hotels or restaurants. There are also many Filipino snack bars or supermarkets that they open on Rua da Alfândega.

Community & Place

Today, Filipinos living in Macao mainly settle in three areas: Rua da Alfândega and Rua da Emenda areas in Macao Peninsula, and Nam Sum Garden in Taipa.

Currently, there are two main organizations in Macao that provide assistance or share relevant information to Macao’s Filipinos, the Humanity Filipino Association in Macau and the Filipino Community Alliance in Macau.

Custom & Language

Due to the influence of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, Catholicism was brought to the Philippines, thus many Filipinos are also Catholics. Macao’s Filipino immigrants living in the area of Rua da Alfândega will go to the nearby churches such as the Sé or St. Antonio’s Church for mass on Sundays, and after that, they will go back to a snack bar on the street for eating and gathering.

Filipino is the main language for them to communicate with each other, and English is used externally. Some Filipinos who have been working and living in Macao for a long time can also use Cantonese to communicate. However, many Filipinos who were born in Macao speak English rather than Filipino as their first language, and sometimes there is a mixture of English, Filipino and Cantonese within a Macao’s Filipino immigrant family.

Significance

The Philippines has always been the second largest source of inbound manpower for Macao after Mainland China. However, most of the Filipinos who came to Macao to work in the past were domestic helpers, security guards, waiters, etc., and their spending capacity was limited. With the rapid development of Macao's tourism and gaming industry, a large number of foreign labor is needed to support this world's fastest-growing economy, so the number of Filipino immigrant workers in Macao has increased sharply since the beginning of the 21st Century. At the same time, the Filipino immigrants who came along with the Southeast Asian Chinese in the middle and late 19th Century were also one of the witnesses of the wave of Chinese exclusion from Southeast Asian countries at that time.

Risk & Protection

Due to the social environment in Macao, the new generation of Filipinos born in Macau gradually speak English as their first language, so the Filipino community and related associations can pay attention to the language inheritance of the Macao’s new generation of Filipinos. Moreover, traditional festivals are slightly ignored compared to Christian festivals, so such traditional cultural activities should also be paid attention to.

At the same time, several Filipino immigrants mentioned that they have experienced discrimination because of their darker color of skin, thus it is also essential to pay attention to the equal rights of minorities and to raise public awareness.
